Kaul makes initial appearance for attempted robbery at Dodgeville Subway

A Dodgeville man, Lee Kaul, made his initial appearance Tuesday in Iowa County Court for Attempted Armed Robbery with the Use of Force, False Imprisonment, Disorderly Conduct, and Felony Bail Jumping.  Kaul appeared in court via Zoom from the Iowa County Jail.  His attorney Allison Markoski appeared in court.  District Attorney Zachary Leigh for the State.  Judge Matthew Allen presided.

According to the Dodgeville Police Department, officers arrested Kaul on Wednesday afternoon, January 22, after they said he tried to rob the Dodgeville Subway with a blowtorch.

The report states that a male, wearing a hat and mask, entered the establishment and asked if the manager was working.  The male then locked the door of the building, removed a blowtorch from his coat, and approached a staff member.  The suspect then stated he was kidding, removed his mask, and left the building.

A Dodgeville Police Officer assisting with the investigation recognized Kaul based on a recent traffic stop. Kaul and his vehicle information was immediately relayed to Iowa County Sheriff’s Deputies. At 4:45 p.m. Kaul was located at a residence near the City of Dodgeville and taken into custody.

A victim in the matter was heard in court Tuesday and in a short statement, she said that Kaul starts so well in recovery but ultimately sabotages himself and that he needs to get the help necessary.  Kaul has other court cases pending that include possession of narcotics as a second and subsequent offense and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Attorney Markoski and her client waived the right to a preliminary hearing and Judge Allen set a status conference for this case for February 11 at 10:30 a.m.  Kaul remains in the Iowa County Jail on a cash bond of $10,000.
