Blackhawks one point better for SWC win over Dodgers
River Valley’s girls basketball team led just enough Thursday to take a win in a SWC girls basketball battle with Dodgeville.
The Blackhawks watched a last ditch fling finish hit off mark and had a 49-48 lead when the final buzzer sounded. It was a back and forth battle all night.
The Hawks saw the Dodgers take an early lead then went ahead 17-16 with 5:43 left in the first half. They stayed ahead until intermission and held a 26-21 lead.
The Dodgers finally caught the Hawks with 4:44 remaining when Addison Reilly’s free throw tied it at 42-42.
But then the Hawks went on a 5-0 run and led 47-41 with a minute left. Karina Osborn had a free throw and a layup off a break for three of the points. Heidi Hegland, who put in 10 points for the Hawks, grabbed a rebound and stuffed it back in for the 47-41 lead.
The Dodgers had one last gasp in them with a pair of thee pointers, one from Abiline Bartz and one from Emma Dougherty. But two free throws from Makenzie Woodhouse accounted for points 48, 49 and the win.
Lexi DeViney led the Hawks with 11 points, nine on three pointers. Hegland’s 10 gave Valley two in double figures.
Dougherty led all scorers and the Dodgers with 14 points and Lydia Rielly added 11.
