Fast start by Cuba City too much for Panthers
A 29 point halftime lead by host Cuba City was too much to overcome as the Cubans trimmed Iowa-Grant 75-42 in a SWAL game Friday.
Everett Zimmer led the Panthers with 13 points. Treaton Loeffelholz added 12 and Landon Friesen also reached double digits with 11.
Miles Hinderman was Cuba City’s scoring leader with 15 .Gavin Vassen added 14 and Hudson Kieler came through with 12.
The Cubans had 11 players reach the scoring column.
The one bright spot for the Panthers was their three point shooting. They put in nine bombs against the Cubans with Zimmer leading the way with three. Friesen and Loeffelholz were next with a pair each.
Panther coach Shawn Dailey expected more out of his team than he saw against the Cubans.
“I was very disappointed in our play,” Dailey said. “I thouht we matched up pretty well with Cuba and had a good game plan going in. We also had a good week of practice.”
But then came the game.
“For whatever reason we not only did not stick to the game plan we did not attempt to execute it,” Dailey pointed out.
”Their defensive pressure gave us way more problems than I every expected,” Dailey said. “I really thought we were prepared for their run and jump defense and would be able to score off it. Instead we melted down and constantly turned it over for easy baskets for them.”
There were some bright spots, though.
“I was very pleased with my bench play from Maddox Fisher and Noah Lang,” Dailey said. “Those two kids always play hard no matter the situ ation and they have great attitudes. I need to find more ways to get them on the floor.”
