Pointers handle Marshall, earn top seed

Seeding.

That is what teams are concerned with at this point of the season and Sunday was the big reveal day that showed were the computer feels the teams should be for the post season.

Two good area teams, Mineral Point and Marshall, had a date to make up a snow out Saturday.  Mineral Point won the match-up 69-43. Sunday the Pointers learned they will defend their Division 4 state title with a number one seed in their part of the bracket.  Marshall will be the second seed in their bracket space.

Saturday the explosive Pointers took control midway through the first half when they outscored the Cardinals 19-8 and took a 34-22 lead. The game was 16-14 with the Pointers clinging to a two point lead when they took off.

Three pointers were a key during the run. Jaxson Wendhausen put in three and finished the first half with 13 of his 23. Eli Lindsey added one and  had nine of his 24 the first half. Drew Aschliman also helped in the run with eight  of his 10.

The win not only featured the usual solid shooting. It also showcased how the Pointers can shut down teams defensively.

“It was a good non-conference road test and an outstanding defensive effort,” said Pointer coach Dan Burreson. “Marshall has a really good team, but we never let them get too comfortable offensively.”

On the scoring end the Pointers also excelled.

“Offensively I thought we did a good job getting the ball to the open man in position to score,” Burreson pointed out. “Overall we defended with a purpose and shared the ball on offense.”

In the preliminary game the Pointers won in overtime.
