Panthers roll to non-conference win over Blackhawks
Iowa-Grant’s boys basketball team had four players in double figures in a 71-58 non-conference win over Prairie du Chien Thursday.
Treaton Loeffelholz led with 21, Grant Rickard and Sam Lundell both netted 14 and Everett Zimmer finished with 11.
Loeffelholz helped the Panthers to a 46-25 halftime lead with 13 points. During the first half run Lundell put in nine and Rickard eight.
The Blackhawks made a second half run but the Panthers held them off for the win.
Bryce Lenzendorf led all scorers with 23 points to pace the Hawks. He nailed five three pointers.
Panthers coach Shawn Dailey enjoyed the win.
“I was pleased with the outcome of our game especially in the first half,” Dailey said. “Prairie du Chein likes to play a trapping 1-3-1 zone defense. I felt like we were prepared for it and handled it quite well. We went into halftime ahead by 21 points.”
Dailey felt the Panthers played like a team.
“We shared the ball really well while having great overall balance,” Dailey said. “In the first half we had seven players scoring five or more points. We also shot it well from deep making eight three pointers in the first half. I believe one of our greatest strengths is that we are such an unselfish team.”
Prairie staged a comeback the second half that forced the Panthers to regroup.
“The second half got a little sloppy. We were on the verge of going up 34 on them but we stopped taking care of the ball and allowed Prairie to get back into the game,” said Dailey. “Credit to them for not rolling over and keep on fighting to the end.”
Part of Prairie closing the gap came from the inexperience the Panthers face.
“We are such a young team still trying to learn and figure out how to put teams away,” said Dailey. “We will get there.”
Dailey felt the Panthers boardwork was a key to the win.
“I was very pleased with the rebounding effort I got from Treaton and Grant,” Dailey said. “Treaton finished with 13 rebounds which seven were offensive and Grant had 11 boards with six being offensive.”
Dailey mentioned some individual play that led to the win.
“Sam shot it well from deep going 4-7 from three point range. He was the catalyst making three threes in the first half during our big run.”
“I also was happy for Tyler Schultz,” added Dailey. “He is a sophomore guard who hasn’t been getting many varsity minutes in games. I felt like I haven’t been getting enough scoring out of my bench so I decided to call Tyler’s number. He didn’t disappoint me. During our first half run Tyler nailed two threes for us. He is someone that I think can really help us here down the stretch when we are having those long droughts of not scoring.”
