Bench play pays off for Dodger girls
Some strong play off the bench coupled with a very successful night at the free throw line helped the Dodgeville girls basketball team handle Richland Center 56-48 in a SWC game Thursday.
Addison Reilly, a sophomore post, came off the bench to score 12 points, eight in the second half to help secure the win.
Freshman guard Josie Mallon was also a key performer with eight bench points, including a pair of huge three pointers down the stretch.
Sophomore starter Abilene Bartz led the Dodgers with 14 points, seven the second half.
The Dodgers were 14 for 17 from the free throw line the second half. Reilly was four for four and Bartz five for six. Marlie McGraw made both her attempts with Lydia Rielly three for four and Emma Dougherty one for two.
Dodgeville coach Hayden Hardyman felt the visiting Hornets, who are looking for their first win of the season, had some good moments.
“I give a lot of credit to Richland Center as they did a nice job with their post play and exposing our lack of help defense,” Hardyman said. “But I’m proud of the team for pushing through adversity and we came out on top.”
Hardyman pointed at the free throws as a big key in the win.
“The big take away from the game was our ability to make our free throws, as we went 14-of-17 in the 2nd half.”
The Hornets had three in double figures. Jaycee Gander led with 15, Kylie Burns added 11 and Carly Mieden finished with 10.
