Dodgers girls take down Prairie
It was a rough one but a good one for the Dodgeville girls basketball team Friday.
That was when the girls team took the long trip to Prairie du Chien to face the defending champion Blackhawks.
The Blackhawks are a depleted team this year with no seniors and no junior varsity. This one went in favor of the Dodgers in a low scoring affair, 44-37.
“This was definitely an ugly win,” coach Alan Seabrooke said. “We got a lot of good shots, but they were not falling. Our field goal % was the lowest of any game this year at 22%. Fortunately we shot a better percentage at the free throw line than most games this year (16/25).”
Abiline Bartz put up 14 to lead the Dodgers with Addison Reilly and Emma Dougherty adding eight each.
Seabrooke felt that holding the Blackhawks to seven first half points played heavily into the win.”
Our defense in the first half was awesome,” Seabrooke said. “We did a great job creating turnovers and matching up in the zone, which made it difficult for them to get good shots.”
It got interesting the second half.
“Prairie du Chien came out in the second half and made a run and got it close, cutting our lead to three, but we were able to maintain the lead the “We had more breakdowns on defense in the second half, and also got in foul trouble with our post players.”
Addison Reilly and Marly McGraw both fouled out.
“It was great to see the girls fight through adversity and maintain the lead, including increasing the lead down the stretch,” Seabrooke concluded.
