Barneveld boys dominate in win over Highland

By John Dalton

A late first half spurt in the last three minutes helped propel Barneveld to a 22-point halftime lead and their hot shooting continued in the second half as the Golden Eagles routed Highland Friday night 91-40 in a Six Rivers Conference contest held at Barneveld.

Ten Eagles scored in the game, led by Hunter Larson who hit five, 3-points shots on the night, and led the Eagles in scoring with a game-high 27 points.  Judson Poad contributed 16 points, and Kaydn Schlimgen had 10 points to help lead Barneveld.

Highland, having to play back-to-back nights, started the game with cold shooting, missing on their first eight shots and allowing Barneveld to build an early lead in the game, 16-5.  Larson was responsible for nine of those early points. It was 28-19 with 3:30 left in the first half when Barneveld went on a 15-2 run to close it out and had a comfortable 43-21 halftime lead.

"We were within nine late in the first half but then Larson and Poad keyed a run that got them up 22 at half," Highland Head Coach Ryan Hill said following the game. "Barneveld is a good team and very deep."

And Barneveld stayed hot in the second half. Ty Thousand hit a 3-point shot to get things going, then Larson lit it up, hitting from inside and outside paving the way for the Eagles. Not only did Larson knock down five 3-pointers, but the team also made 15 of them on the night.  Poad, Noah Doescher, Schmlimgen, and Brigham Schauff each hit two from beyond the arc.

It was a complete game for the Eagles, something Barneveld Head Coach Tyler Sullivan was pleased to see.  “Against Lancaster and against Ridge, we played two pretty good halves, one each half against each team, trying to put a whole game together. We were a little sloppy to start the game tonight, but the second half the boys played really, really well,” he said.

“The last four-five minutes of the first half really spurted us, and that is more to our depth. We have a lot of guys we can throw out there. I’m really proud of the boys, they played a great second half and we’relooking forward to next week,” Sullivan said.

"We have to pick it up defensively," Coach Hill said.  "We also have to do better against the press as their pressure bothered us. We got some good looks but didn't hit them," he added. "We don't have that strong post presence that we had last year.  We lack size and our bench is young. We will keep at it and learn from playing good teams."

Jack Tarrell led the Cardinals in scoring with 21 points. Kaden Washa had 15.

Barneveld moved to 2-1 on the season and will host Monticello next Thursday, December 18. Highland is now 2-3 and they hosted Potosi/Cassville Tuesday night, and you can find the results of that game in the paper.
