Very thought provoking letter
Dear Editor,
In a letter to the editor titled "The human rights test for Democrats" that was published in the 11/27 edition of the Dodgeville Chronicle was very thought provoking. The writer is critical of John Fetterman (D-PA) for the Senator's unwavering "support" and "devotion" to the State of Israel during the war in Gaza. I would agree with the writer when he states, "But shouldn't being a Democrat mean a commitment to universal human rights rather than to any particular nation?"
Later in the letter we read some quotes from Peter Beinart, Editor-at-large at Jewish Currents, who "explains that Judaism teaches that every human being possesses infinite worth because all people are made in God's image." Amen to that!
Next year our country will be celebrating the 250th anniversary of its birth as a new nation. In the Declaration of Independence we read these powerful words, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
Unfortunately, in this nation, we have witnessed millions of preborn children, "made in God's image", who are denied the right to life, and the chief supporters of this "genocide" are Democrats. Take a close look at the Democratic Party Platform when it comes to abortion.
C.S. Lewis in his classic book, "Mere Christianity", writes, "The Eternal Being, who knows everything and who created the whole universe, became not only a man but (before that) a baby, and before that a foetus inside a Woman's body." Christmas is the celebration of Christ's birth nearly 2000 years ago in the little town of Bethlehem!
Last year, Pope Francis, who died on April 21 of this year, was asked about the 2024 Presidential election between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. This writer shared some of the Pope's comments in a letter to the editor that was published in the Dodgeville Chronicle a few weeks before the election. Pope Francis was "very critical of both major party nominees for their antilife and migration policies."
We have witnessed over the last few months the raids and arrests of immigrants (some legal citizens) in various cities in our country. President Trump and his Republican administration have gone too far with this action. The missile attacks on alleged drug boats resulting in 87 deaths is another example of unethical policy coming from the White House.
The last paragraph from the 11/27/25 letter reads, "Perhaps the highest devotion should be to the principle that every human life has intrinsic value and is worthy of respect." I agree. A "respect" that is clearly stated in our Declaration of Independence and as taught in both Judaism and Christianity.
