The Iowa County Cancer Coalition Fundraiser is this coming Saturday - August 16 - at the Comer Activity Center at Lands’ End in Dodgeville. This is a fantastic fundraising event where all the proceeds stay in Iowa County to help cancer patients and their families through it all! There’s a board of directors that includes pretty much every berg in Iowa County and they do a great job! Stop out between 4:00 and 7:00 for some fun, food and bid on some items!

The Iowa County Antique & Collectors Club’s show is coming up on August 23. It’s held on Jones Branch Road near Mineral Point and Rewey and then next is the Iowa County Fair runs August 28 thru Labor Day at the Iowa County Fairgrounds in Mineral Point!

Sunday, August 24 is the date for the second (and final) Dodgeville Lions Club Antique Show & Flea Market they hold twice a summer at Harris Park in Dodgeville. With it being inside of Ley Pavilion, you don’t have to worry about the weather - being too hot or too cold, or any rain! The club has a pie sale that starts early in the morning and runs out early along with a concession stand with BBQ (Sloppy Joes), hot dogs and lots of coffee, plus other stuff! And there are great treasures to find among the dealers! Don’t miss it!

We didn’t travel very far for our Saturday morning breakfast as it was “Cars & Coffee” Saturday downtown. It was Terry, his son Bill, Potsie, Tom and myself meeting at the Chronicle office at 7:00 to head to Cafe by Country Kitchen, all crammed in my vehicle as the rest left their “vintage” vehicles parked downtown for the show. Bob met us there as he decided not to take his Thunderbird convertible! Amy Jo (Mary Jo, Jo Jo and many other Joes) was our waitress, greeting us with her usual “friendly” comments! Terry had the biggest strawberry French toast I have ever seen, but he got through it! “Jo Jo” kept us on our toes the entire time too! We were out of there by 8:00 to get to the show downtown. There were a bunch of vehicles there besides the ones we left there.

The featured vehicles, which are parked in the prime spots along West Merrimac Street in front of Cathryn’s Market and the Chronicle office were “Foreign” ones. There weren’t that many foreign vehicles there, but what was on the street (which is blocked off) were impressive! There were a lot of other vehicles in the Iowa County Courthouse Parking Lot. Potsie, Tom and several others mentioned that there were a good amount of first-time vehicles there along with a goodly amount of first-time spectators. That means the word is getting out about it!

I learned, over the weekend, that the CAP building in downtown Dodgeville has been sold. It will mean a major renovation will take place for the business that is moving to that spot!

The Cobb Corn Roast Sunday events were touch and go with it raining all morning. That moved things inside at the Community Building/Fire Department - music, free sweet corn and chicken bbq. But it cleared for the parade and it came off without a hitch! People gathered on the highway to watch as the road was closed down during the parade. There was plenty of candy for the youngsters and anyone else who wanted some! I get to see people that maybe I only get to see once a year and that’s priceless!

Fall baseball will take place in Dodgeville at Centennial Park starting Sunday, August 24 and run for 5 weeks, with Labor Day Sunday being a day off! Dodgeville, Cross Plains, Pecatonica/Iowa-Grant and Ithaca/Richland Center will be the teams playing. We will be running a concession stand for each of the four games scheduled those Sundays which start at 10 a.m. Fall baseball brings a lot of the incoming freshmen into the sport to play with their older high school players!

Speaking of baseball - how about them Milwaukee Brewers?!! It’s been an amazing run with this young group of guys! I hope it keeps up!

Today, Thursday 14, is Romance Awareness Day. It is a day to remind couples to focus on their relationship and celebrate romance, serving as a mid-year complement to Valentine's Day. This day is part of Romance Awareness Month, which encourages couples to prioritize intimacy and quality time throughout the month of August!

I think my “romantic” days left me many years ago. Don’t get me wrong, I have many women friends and I love them all!
