Hohlstein, Barbara (Smith)



Barbara Smith Hohlstein of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 21, 2025. She was born April 9, 1930, in Dodgeville, Wisconsin to Edward Lyle Smith and Alma Irene Smith.  Barb was the youngest of seven children born to Edward and Alma Smith. After graduating from Poynette High School, Barbara earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and then embarked on a lifelong and fulfilling teaching career at Menomonee Falls High School, where she taught English and chaired the department.

Barbara was a joyful soul who spent most of her life teaching and traveling the world. In 2000, Barbara married her high school sweetheart, Clifford Hohlstein. Barbara is survived by her husband of 25 years, Clifford Hohlstein; her nieces Beverly (Johnson) Harms of Dodgeville, Wisconsin and Jeanne Johnson of Eagle River, Wisconsin; her nephew William Johnson of Columbus, Ohio; and many grandnephews and a grandniece. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Lyle Laverne Smith and sisters Eunice Elaine Smith, Alice Lorraine Smith, Caroline Smith, Maxine Smith and LaCreta Mae (Smith) Johnson; her brother-in-law, Guerdon Johnson; and her niece, Myra (Johnson) Elliott. 

Visitation was held Monday, April 28, 2025, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1717 Church Street, Wauwatosa from 10 a.m. until the time of Funeral Service at 11 a.m.  Private family burial at East Side Cemetery, Dodgeville, WI.  In lieu of flowers, memorials to Trinity Episcopal Church appreciated.
