My Story - by Ranee Kurschner

I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in May 2024. It is a cancer of plasma cells. Normal plasma cells are found in the bone marrow and are an important part of the immune system.

In multiple myeloma, the overgrowth of plasma cells in the bone marrow can crowd out normal blood-forming cells, leading to low blood counts. Multiple myeloma also causes bone and calcium problems, infections and kidney problems. Myeloma cells interfere with cells that help keep bones strong by dissolving the bone, making them weak and easy to break. Fractured bones are a major problem with myeloma.

I am being treated with chemotherapy drugs and have had radiation on my upper arm from damage caused by the cancer to  my humerus bone. This is also how the cancer was discovered. Hopefully after treatment is completed, I will be considered in remission.
