Cardinals survive scrappy Timberwolves

Highland’s volleyball team had its hands full with a very scrappy squad from River Ridge Thursday but were still able to win in a sweep.

The Cardinals took down the Lady Timberwolves 25-20, 25-23 and 25-21.

“It was rough,” Highland coach Maria Wineski said about her squad’s performance in the Six Rivers West match-up. “They seemed to get a hand on everything which made it hard for us to get the big play or big hit. We were also a little flat.”

Anna Hennessey had a strong night for the Cardinals. She recorded five kills, four blocks and three aces while adding five digs.

Sophie Tarrell had six kills and a block and Katelyn Mueller five kills and a block as the Cardinals were strong at the net.

Kate Tarrell added five kills and an ace for the Cards.

Other notable stats were three kills, an ace and six digs for Cora Healy-Dougherty, 13 digs and an ace by Brinleigh Bollant, 13 assists and an ace by Celia Oleson and 10 assists and a pair of aces by Sumaryn Halverson.

“We found out we need to have more focus and pick up the intensity,” Wineski said. “We have to work on being more disciplined and improve our passing.”

The passing was a problem early but the Cardinals worked their way through that.

“We were able to get some touches and we played well at the net with six  blocks,” noted Wineski.

“It was a challenge and I am glad we got the win.”

The Cardinal junior varsity also tripped the Lady Timberwolves.
