Along The Ad Routes

by Mike Reilly

Saturday morning breakfast took us a little to the south as we headed to Spring Green and landed at the General Store. We hadn’t been there in quite some time and when we arrived we were a couple minutes early as they didn’t open until 8:00. We got out of Potsie’s vehicle and walked in with former Dodgeville resident Sharon Nicholas. She now lives in and has a shop in Spring Green. We had some catching up to do with her. She is part of the “Fall Art Tour: that is this coming weekend. She said she has been for 15 years, as an originator. Besides Potsie and me, it was Bob and Terry on the trip south. Dewey, Tom and Dave all had other plans. Three of us ordered two pancakes, filled with peaches and walnuts or pecans. That was Bob, Terry and me. Potsie had French toast. He was the only one that finished his meal. The French toast was huge, but the pancakes were huger (if that’s even a word!).The plates are big and you couldn’t even pour syrup on the pancakes as they overhung the plates! Bob and I carved a hole in the center of the two pancakes to pour the syrup into. Then we could carve away at them until they were about half gone and we had to quit! Terry just put a little syrup on one edge and worked his way to the middle! We’ve had pancakes there before, but never like those! I talked with the cook afterwards and she said she just pours the batter and what come out comes out. She said she hoped we got out money’s worth and we sure did!

After we left the General Store we took a little trip around Spring Green and checked out a few things since we hadn’t been there for awhile!

When we got back to Dodgeville we checked out a few of the vehicles at the “Cars and Coffee” that was going on just outside of the Chronicle office. A lot of the vehicles were heading on a “Cruise” after 10:00 when the event ended.

Don’t forget to make plans to go to the Dodgeville Annual “Trunk or Treat” that is held in the courthouse parking lot on Saturday, October 26 from 1-3 p.m. It’s hosted by In the Beginning Child Care. There’s food, games and fun for the entire family!

Friday night I stayed out probably the latest I had been out in about five years. I stopped up at the Dodgeville Homecoming football game and helped out in the concession stand since Dodgeville Baseball had the early shift. And it was a madhouse. Then I went to the Hall of Fame induction ceremonies at the Dodger Bowl. With six individuals and three girls cross country teams being inducted, it went until about midnight before I left! It was great seeing so many people I hadn’t seen in quite some time. The speeches were really gut wrenching. I think every one of the speakers talked about one of the inductees - the late Ted Chitwood - in their speech!

This Friday thru Sunday is the annual Fall Art Tour that takes you from Mineral Point to Baraboo with stops at artists on the way in the Dodgeville and Spring Green areas. It’s alway great to see the colors besides the artists in action and their works! See a list on page 17 of this edition.

Today (Thursday, October 17) is National Mulligan Day. Now, in my golfing days, I did take a few mulligans (do-over shots) but not very many. National Mulligan Day may’ve started when a guy named Mulligan did a do-over shot, but there’s more to the meaning. “Give yourself a second chance on National Mulligan Day. Whether it is a former relationship with a friend or loved one, an old hobby that you abandoned or a past mistake that needs rectifying, you can give it another go on National Mulligan Day.”

Really, I think I may be too old to celebrate National Mulligan Day whether it be golf or anything else!

It was tough to see “Ice possible, drive with care” on my car’s speedometer Monday and Tuesday morning!
