Support Dodgeville Schools
Dear Editor,
We attended an informational meeting about the upcoming school referendum to support the operating budget of the Dodgeville School District. It was very informative and we encourage others to attend. We will be voting YES to this referendum.
Two facts stood out to us:
1. The steady decline in per pupil funding from the state since 2011 is the most significant part of the problem for Dodgeville and most public schools around the state.
2. The proposed mil rates for 2024 through 2028 (by which school tax levy is calculated) would be lower than those paid from 2014 through 2022. In other words, if the referendum passes, we would still paying a lower percentage of our income to support schools from 2024-2028 than we did from 2014 through 2022.
Our public schools are fundamental to our community and must be supported. We need better models for supporting them financially which means that in addition to voting YES, we need to vote for legislators who will support public school education. Please understand where your candidates stand on this issue as you go to vote.
