Referendum addresses needs
Dear Editor,
Dodgeville area voters will soon be asked to approve a school operating referendum, and I'd like to share my thoughts.
Our school funding formula is broken and given the current political climate, it is highly unlikely to be fixed anytime soon.
While nobody likes to ask taxpayers to pay more, we are at a crucial crossroads when it comes to funding our schools. And we aren't alone as 46% of all Wisconsin school districts are pursuing referendums this November 5.
The referendum on the ballot addresses needs, not wants. Administrators and our school board crafted the referendum using input from community members. The district has already reduced staffing, delayed building maintenance, and cut spending for athletics, technology, and transportation. Any further cuts would be detrimental to the instruction and curriculum students need to be successful in an ever-changing world. Plus, it also undermines our ability to attract and retain high quality staff.
My family moved to the Dodgeville School District 18 years ago and I have two kids in this school district. We have a wonderful school that has offered incredible opportunities to our students, not only in academics and athletics, but in music, drama, art and so many other opportunities. I would like to keep it that way.
I support this referendum because I want our current and future students to continue to have the benefit of a top-notch education for years to come. I can't think of a better investment to make towards the health and well-being of our community.
We have a well-run district with great teachers and great kids. We need to pass this referendum. Please join me in voting yes on November 5.
Sincerely,
Steph Bennett-Brokopp
