Paul “Poopsy” Francis Hughes, age 66 of Hollandale died on Tuesday, October 8, 2024 at the Monroe Clinic Hospital. He was born on June 14, 1958 in Monroe to Edward Laverne and Nancy Lea (Swenson) Hughes. He grew up in Monroe, eventually worked with his family in E & N Hughes Company, INC, the family business started in 1975 by his parents. Poopsy grew up in Monroe, attending grade school, and then graduated from the Monroe High School in 1977. He worked for the family business for a bit and then joined the United States Marines in 1978 with his cousin Mike Griffiths. He ended up eventually being a cook in the Marines, and met his future wife Karen Edgren. They had a son, Paul F. Hughes, Jr., and then he was discharged in 1982. They moved to Hollandale after buying his grandmother’s house, and he worked in the family business. In 1985 they had a second son, Dale L Hughes. Poopsy was a crew foreman, running one of the crews, and then later worked in the company office doing estimating. He retired in 2021. Poopsy loved hunting, Ranger riding, enjoying his land he owned, and visiting with and cooking for friends. He loved his dog, Peanut, country music, which he had playing constantly, and western movies and TV shows. His pride and joy were his grandchildren, Zoey and Levi.
Poopsy is survived by his son Dale Hughes of Hollandale; his grandchildren, Zoey and Levi Hughes; two brothers, Terry (Laura) Hughes of Monroe, and Todd (Terri) Hughes of Monroe; many nieces and nephews; and many good friends. Preceded in death by his son Paul F. Hughes, JR, and his parents, Edward & Nancy Hughes and many good friends who died before him.
A visitation for Poopsy will be held on Sunday, October 13, 2024 at the New Hope Lutheran Hollandale site from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM. A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 14, 2024 at 11:00 AM at the church. The service will be live cast for the public on the Saether Funeral Service Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/saetherfuneralservice. Rev. Chris Strohm will officiate. Burial will follow in the Long Valley Cemetery in rural Hollandale. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.
