Along The Ad Routes

by Mike Reilly

We received a couple of notes from readers renewing their Dodgeville Chronicle last week. The first one came from longtime friend Leo Clerkin of Barneveld.  He said,”Looks like I missed the month free. That’s OK. Great paper. Many hours of enjoyment reading great sports and local news coverage and Mike in his breakfast travels!”

The second one came from another longtime friend, Margaret Disrud, formerly from Ridgeway and currently at the Mineral Point Care Center. She said, “Please renew the Chronicle for another year. I’ve been reading it for over 70 years and now that I’m in the care center, I’d like to still keep up on the news. I remember when Ed Mundy used to come around for stories. Enjoying your Saturday morning breakfast trips.”

I too remember Ed Mundy. He was the editor of the Chronicle when I was pretty young. He used to even visit farms and get stories from businesses and even the farmers. He was the “Pick Up Man”.

Saturday morning Tom (DeMuth) had a 9:30 meeting and I had to be at Centennial park about that same time to open the storage shed and begin cooking for an 11:00 a.m. baseball game start, so we ventured just to the north and ate breakfast at the Pointer Cafe. It was me driving (for a change) with Bob, Terry and Tom risking their lives riding with me. As always, Terry has to remind me where and when to turn into the Pointer. I hit the brakes pretty hard, but didn’t quite slide into the parking lot! For some reason I always almost drive by it. Dave joined us, coming from Klevenville. Dewey had Taliesin tours and Potsie had to head out of town. We always have good service and good food there and run into people we hadn’t seen in awhile. We had Amy as our server. We always give her a rough time, but the gives it back .... and then some!

The 11:00 game was with Highland and JV was to follow. That made it a pretty good and busy day in the concession stand. Thanks to Michele Latterell and Amy Berg (my niece) it was handled very well! Michele and Amy stayed for a good share of the second game and then Kelly Haakenson finished up in the stand with Sarah Fockler helping restock and clean up! Thanks to them for all the help. I used to be able to do it pretty much alone, but those days went by a long time ago!

We had a game and a half (make-up) with Platteville Friday night and then an Home Talent game on Sunday. That meant five games in three days. That’s more than enough! It was nice weather though!

I see where the old Dodgeville State Bank building is being auctioned off on-line May 27-29. The building will be open for inspection May 17 from 11-2.

University and college graduations have begun with high schools right around the corner. Dodgeville, Mineral Point and Pecatonica graduate on Friday night, May 24 with Highland and Iowa-Grant the next day. Barneveld, also from our main coverage area, is the last one and that’s Saturday morning, June 1. Brother Pat has two grandchildren saying goodbye to Dodgeville High School this year!

Today (Thursday, May 16) is “National BBQ Day”. We are very fortunate to have Bob’s Bitchin BBQ in downtown Dodgeville as a destination restaurant. People come from all over to try his homemade sauces and delicious food. There are times you can see people sitting outside with a pager waiting to get a table! We also have a traveling food truck - JJ’s BBQ - in Dodgeville! We are fortunate!
