A popular Montfort business received extensive damage Saturday night when a driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the building.
Grab-A-Cone, a popular stopping spot in the area, was struck by a vehicle driven by Tyde Benson, 23, Darlington. As a result of the accident, Grant County Sheriff’s Department personnel arrested Benson and charged him with operating while intoxicated, first offense.
Benson was uninjured in the crash and his vehicle was removed by Precision Auto of Platteville.
According to Amy Knutson Michek, who represents the business, said their insurance company has viewed the property as have several contractors.
“The inside needs to be completely gutted,” Michek said. “The truck took out our whole storage room and pushed it all the way through to the other side of the building and pushed the side wall. I don't know how the ceiling didn't cave in because it took out the load bearing wall as well. The contractors think once the load bearing wall is stable, we should gut the place and rebuild the inside.”
“We can't go any bigger because basically our building and porches are our whole lot,” Michek continued. “We are just glad no one was hurt. Where he initially hit the building, the storage room, is usually where Em's two boys and Lucas hang out when they are there with us. Just very thankful we weren't open.”
