Rule is champ, Carey, Collins 2nd at state wrestling

Mineral Point 165 lb. Kade Rule topped the list in Division 3 Saturday at the WIAA State Wrestling Championships with a convincing championship. He won by major decision then a pin before taking a 5-1 win in the title match.

Roen Carey lost a 6-2 decision in the finals to finish runner-up at 132. He avenged several earlier in the year losses to Iowa-Grant/Highland’s Hunter Stevens with a 5-4 win in the semifinals after a first-round pin.

In the girls division, Dealya Collins also was runner-up at 120 lbs. She had a pair of pins before losing a tight 4-2 match in the finals.

The other Pointer qualifying for state, Elliot Kite, dropped his first-round match and didn’t advance.

Pointer coach Curtis Fiedler said about the event, “I was really proud of our crew this weekend. Elliot got some great experience, Roen and Dealya had an amazing weekend regardless of what their end result was, and Kade put a nice exclamation mark on his season by bringing a wall chart home.

“I couldn't be more proud of the effort and the work that these four put in this week. The best part is, these four will be back next year and we get to try it again, hopefully with better results and a few more teammates up there with them.”
