Along The Ad Routes

by Mike Reilly
Saturday morning breakfast took our group east to Verona and Gus’s Diner. We had been there before, but not with the group that went this time. Somehow John Swanson joined us (not usually an early riser). Tom DeMuth was dogsitting in Platteville with his wife and she gave him a reprieve to come back to Dodgeville so he could socialize with us. Dewey had to go to Poynette to watch his grandson play his final-season basketball game, so he met Bob, me, John and Tom (driving) at Gus’s. We kind of started with one waitress as Dewey was the first at a table for 4, but we had to move to a larger spot since I forgot to tell him there would be five! We had very good service from Gloria. Dewey kept singing G-L-O-R-I-A to her. He asked her if her husband ever did that and she said, “No, you wouldn’t want to hear him sing!” The place was pretty full the entire time with four waitresses really busting their tails.

At Gus’s there was a table of six sitting behind us. Bob talked with them as we were leaving and found out the group was from Verona and Mount Horeb with one from Edgerton. They, like us, meet for breakfast. The difference is they only meet once a month!

The Annual Wisconsin Grilled Cheese Championships will be here before you know it. They are held at Harris Park right here in Dodgeville on Saturday, April 20. We are really, really looking for people to compete and to volunteer so take a look at the Dodgeville Chamber of Commerce website to be a part of it! We really do need people to sign-up in both spots, especially as a competitor as the VIP tickets that are sold and given out depend on the number of competitors!

Good luck to the Dodgeville Co-Op Gymnastics Team that consists of Dodgeville, Mineral Point, Iowa-Grant and Highland athletes as the team qualified for state. They will compete Friday and Satrurday in Wisconsin Rapids.

The Dodgeville wrestlers that competed at state last week all won championships - WOW! Congratulations to Shane Rochon, Haakon Peterson, Charlie Meudt and Reid Spurley. All season long they only had one loss between the four!

Great job by the Iowa-Grant/Highland, Mineral Point and Pecatonica/Argyle wrestlers. IG/H had all seven place 4th or better, Mineral Point had a champ in 165 lb. Kade Rule, and two seconds and Pec/Argyle had a champ in 106 lbs. Aiden Gruenenfelder and a third! Read all about it in our sports pages!

Also, the Argyle/Pecatonica girls basketball team was our lone area Regional Champions. Good luck on their quest to state!

Today (Thursday the 29th) is Leap Day! For any of you who wonder just why Leap Year comes every four years, here’s the answer: “Leap day exists to even out time discrepancies between the calendar year and the solar year. While it's widely accepted that a calendar year has 365 days, it takes Earth about 365.242 days to orbit the sun. The Julian Calendar rounded this number up to 365.25 days.” However, the inaccuracy in averaging the orbital years caused regressions anyway, and the calendar dates and seasons ended up off-kilter by about one day per century. The unquoted sentence came from Facebook, so it’s gotta be true!

A couple more things about “Leap Day” -- I’d better watch out because it’s a day where marriage proposals flip genders (like they don’t anyway in this day and age) and the woman proposes to the man that she’s chasing and also “Leap Day” babies are known as “Leaplings”!
