Along The Ad Routes

by Mike Reilly

I heard by the grapevine that it was Roseann  Rossing’s (Sergeant Roso) birthday and that one of the most important people in her life forgot it! No name will be mentioned!

It was Bob Kratochwill’s 38th (dyslectic) birthday on Friday (Flag Day) so our plans were to head to Dickeyville to our #67th place, but when there was just going to be Bob, Terry and me gong we decided to save that stop for when we could have a bigger crew! We ended up going to the Argyle Cafe in Argyle, just to the southeast of us about 45 minutes. We hadn’t been there since “Lola” was on her first day there a good while ago. We walked into the cafe and there she was and her response, “boy there’s trouble!” She remembered us and asked where the rest of the group was. Well, Dave couldn’t make it, Potsie had some house problems to fix and Dewey and Tom were out of town. She said she supposed those were OK excuses. We had a fun time with her, giving her grief - but she gave it right back! She kept our coffees filled and told us a lot about her life and “fix it” execution - maybe execution is the right word! She works at five jobs (ambitious) and likes to be doing something all the time. Terry and I had omelettes with hash browns and toast while Bob had eggs, bacon and French toast. Terry couldn’t finish all of his, but I did (of course)! On the way out, the owner was sitting outside with a friend and he said, “Thank you guys for coming!”

We always enjoy the ride on the “new” County F back to where we hit 39 to get to Hollandale and then hit 191 to Dodgeville. When we got back to the Dodgeville city limits we went on a short tour of the new duplexes and apartments just north of Walmart. Then we went to the “Hallada” subdivision to the west before getting back to the Chronicle. Terry said he wanted to take a nap, but I ran into his wife at Piggly Wiggly and she said son Bill stopped over right away and they were off on a cruise in Terry’s restored 1968 Camaro so the nap would have to wait!

This weekend is the annual Livingston “Good Earth” Festival. It will have fastpitch softball, oldtimers softball, youth baseball, kickball and more on Friday and Saturday at the ball field then everything shifts to Memorial Park on Sunday with a lot gong on for the whole family, including a petting zoo, dancers, car show, chicken  BBQ and parade at 1:30.

We had a couple of thunderstorms during the night. Then early morning Sunday had a couple more. When I went to Centennial Park in Dodgeville with stuff for the stand at 7:15 there was standing water by the bases in the infield. We sure have been getting rain - almost every other day! It is supposed to have rained Wednesday and Thursday with one forecast saying right through Sunday - I hope not!

Mark your calendars for the Saturday, June 29 “Independence Day” celebration in Ridgeway. It will be a completely day-long event with something for the entire family,  including run/walk, Suicide Prevention activities, ball games, music, fireworks and more!

Today, Thursday, June 20 is the first “official” day of summer. Summer Days are here! Summer begins with the solstice on Thursday, June 20, 2024, marking the astronomical first day of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. What exactly IS the summer solstice? Is it really the longest day of the year? Welcome the solstice with some interesting facts and folklore. In the Northern Hemisphere, the June solstice (aka summer solstice) occurs when the Sun travels along its northernmost path in the sky. This marks the astronomical start of summer in the northern half of the globe. (In the Southern Hemisphere, it’s the opposite: the June solstice marks the astronomical start of winter when the Sun is at its lowest point in the sky.)
