Point baseball season ends with 2-0 loss to Viroqua

By John Dalton

The Mineral Point baseball team’s season came to an end with a tough 2-0 loss to Coulee Conference Champion Viroqua last Thursday night at the Viroqua Park Bowl in a WIAA Regional championship game.  The Pointers played a solid game defensively but could only register two hits against Viroqua pitching.

Bryce Vamstad pitched for the Pointers and recorded 18 outs in a nice outing on the mound allowing only one earned run, three strikeouts, and no walks.  Adam Cody and Brady Radtke each registered a hit for Mineral Point.

After the game, Mineral Point Head Coach Brett Lawinger said, “Yeah tough loss to Viroqua.  We knew going in it would be a tough game, which they all are at that point. Bryce pitched great, maybe the best he's looked all year. We played very well on defense after a little stumble in the 1st inning, they responded well and got out of some jams. We couldn't find the big hit we needed to drive in runs. I figured running might be hard to find in a game like that, and we had a few chances with runners in scoring position but couldn't drive them in.”

Mineral Point ended their season at 15-8. Viroqua is 20-6 and moved on to play La Crosse Aquinas in Prairie du Chien on Tuesday in a WIAA Sectional game.

“Overall a pretty solid season. We were in every game we played and in the hunt for a conference title until the last few games. Moving forward, these younger guys must keep improving and move us towards conference championships and deep postseason runs,” said Lawinger.

“Senior captains, Brady (Radtke), Bryce (Vamstad), and Landon (Thousand) were great leaders for us.  They will be hard to replace.  Luke and Gibsen came back out for baseball this year after a few years off and found themselves in very important roles for us.  I’m very happy they came back out.”
