Schmit, Douglas F. “Moose”

Douglas Francis Schmit passed away at the age of 67 on Friday, May 31, 2024 just the way he wanted – surrounded by family.

Born in Dodgeville, Wisconsin on December 28, 1956 to Joseph Louis and Helen Magdalene (Wedig) Schmit, Doug was one of seven children. He grew up in Mineral Point, Wisconsin where he attended school and graduated in 1976. He was a standout Pointer wrestler who went to state two years, winning third place and serving as team captain his senior year, and was inducted into the Mineral Point Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Doug was many things to many people including a jokester, dog lover, Crown Royal drinker, pool shark, fisherman, hunter, bright color wearer, storyteller, fabulous cook, and loveable guy who was not afraid to speak his mind. Doug’s true passion was found in woodworking. He crafted intricate pieces and his legacy lives on in the beautiful creations he made for others. Doug cared about those he loved and he made sure they knew it. Whether it was a phone call, text, woodworking project, homemade food, or just showing up, Doug took the time to show his love. Doug’s lifelong nickname was “Moose,” although his favorite nickname was gifted by his grandchildren - “Papa.” Doug’s greatest loves were his children and grandchildren.

Doug is survived by three children - Brayde Schmit, Baylei (Joseph) Baltus, and Brenyn (Megan) Schmit - two grandchildren - Graham and Reid Schmit - five siblings - Joe (Lois) Schmit, Pete (Mary) Schmit, Harley (Jeanie Trout) Schmit, Margie King, and Chrissy (Bill) Burke - and his beloved dog - Waylon - he is also survived by his granddogs and countless extended family members and friends.

In Heaven Doug was greeted by his father - Joseph, brother - Clarence, sister-in-law - Carol (Walker) Schmit, exceptional uncle - Delvin Wedig, two beloved dogs both named Queenie, and it cannot be overstated how much Doug was looking forward to being reunited with his mother - Helen.

Doug’s family will hold a celebration of life on Saturday, June 29, 2024. Contact the family for details on the celebration.
