Two local Pioneers posthumously being honored at this year’s Farmers Appreciation Day

In its 38th year, the Iowa County Farmers Appreciation Day is again saluting some of the hardest workers in the county.  This day has truly become a community tradition.  The event recognizes local farmers and agribusinesses and provides an opportunity to promote and educate the general public about the industry.  The event is held July 13th and 14th in Dodgeville.

This year, the Farmers Appreciation Day Committee is posthumously honoring two of its founding fathers, Dave Ladd and Robert (Bob) McNeill, as grand marshals at this year's parade.

In digging up old newspaper articles, and talking to family members, committee members, and friends, it appears the idea of Farmers Appreciation Day started back in the mid-1980s on an annual fishing trip to Fletcher Lake Lodge in Ontario, Canada.  Bobby McNeill, Bob’s youngest son who is also very active with the committee said, “With Dodgeville Dairy Days gone, a few fishermen from Dodgeville, sitting in a boat in Canada, floated an idea to bring back honoring local farmers.  Bob, Dave, and others found a way.”

Bob’s older son Terry added, “Dave Ladd, Joe Esch, and Bob felt it was important to recognize the Farmers in Iowa County since they were such an integral part of the economy and landscape of the area. A Parade and a place to serve good reasonable food to everybody were part of the plans, along with special events, exhibits, and entertainment."...
