Steffl reaches 1000 point mark at River Ridge tourney

Iowa-Grant’s boys basketball team got in some extra work with a two game tournament at River Ridge during the holiday break.

While the Panthers came out short in both non-conference battles, losing 72-53 to host River Ridge and 81-61 vs Blair Taylor they did see a major milestone reached.

It happened when senior guard Cyle Steffl hit a shot in the River Ridge game that put him over 1000 career points for the Panthers.

Panthers coach Shawn Dailey had this to say about Steffl’s accomplishment.

“I thought Cyle played extremely well on each end of the floor in both games today.” Dailey said.  “He was in attack mode all day by constantly getting into the paint and drawing fouls, getting to the free throw line.”

Steffl had nine rebounds, a team high, vs Blair Taylor.  He had 20 points in the River Ridge game and 24 against Blair Taylor.

Ashton Schmitz had 12 and Everett Zimmer 16 with some dead-eye shooting in the Ridge game.

“Another player I thought played extremely well was Everett Zimmer,” Dailey added.   “He is our energizer bunny out there and always draws the hardest assignments and defensive tasks.  The kid never complains or backs down and his motor never shuts off.  He almost single handedly kept us in the River Ridge game with four three pointers.  One of his threes was an and one when he drew a foul.”

Schmitz supported Steffl’s point total against Blair Taylor with 10.

“We aren’t a team that is built for two games in one day let alone going back to back,” Dailey pointed out.  “We just didn’t have much left in the team when we played our second game against Blair Taylor.”
