Pointer Boys Too Much for Dodgers
By John Dalton
Mineral Point, undefeated and ranked #1 in the state in Division 4, paid a visit to Dodgeville in a non-conference game Tuesday night won by the Pointers 70-44.
Dodgeville couldn’t find the basket early in this game as the Pointers sprinted out to a 21-7 lead and hit on all cylinders with their quickness, tough defense, and their ability to push the ball when given the chance.
The Pointers would hit 8, 3-point shots in the first half with Pointer Landen Thousand hitting three of them. Landen led all scorers in this contest with 20. Ten players would score for Mineral Point in this game.
The Pointers would have a 39-15 lead at the half. But the Dodgers played well in the second half, mostly because shots started to fall. Reilly Berg had a nice night for Dodgeville scoring 11 of his 14 points in the second half.
Said Dodger Head Coach Matt McGraw after the game, “We knew coming in with Mineral Point being ranked #1 it would be a tough matchup. They are a very solid, deep team. Overall, I’m very happy with how we did some things. We shot the ball poorly in the first half. We had good looks that would have kept it closer,” he said.
Said Mineral Point Head Coach Dan Burreson on his teams’ performance, “I thought we shared it well and our balance was a big key tonight. Our depth was key as well. We don’t drop off as we basically have 7-8 starters, so I thought those two things were key tonight.”
Burreson went on to say, “Tonight, at times, we moved the ball as well as we have. I said to the guys afterward that we just want to be consistent with who we are.”
Dodger Coach McGraw, “We are continuing to improve on our abilities to free people up with screening and solid, timely cuts. Reilly looked to attack a little more in the 2nd half and had a solid half with 11 of his 14 points. Brady got to the rim a few times. Bryce and John hit a couple of shots out of our offense. And a couple of younger guys stepped in and did some solid things for us. We have to keep getting better at all aspects of the game but there is some solid progress.”
Mineral Point will get back into conference play this Friday, January 5th when they host Fennimore. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Dodgeville will also get back into conference play as they host Lancaster this Friday as well, again with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m.
