Dodgers style wins out over Lomira

Two teams, two different styles.

The Dodgeville girls basketball team likes to get out and run. Lomira, on the other hand, likes to play Hoosiers style and pass the ball several times before taking a shot.

For the first half the Lions had the plan that worked the best and led 23-16.

The Dodgers used a momentum run the second half to take the lead and expanded it.

At 16:44 Maggie White started it with six straight points in the lane, McKenna Reilly scored on a drive and Rayona Kitelinger-Foster went to the line for two successful free throws that pulled the Dodgers within one. Bri Wasley then snuck in for an offensive rebound that gave the Dodgers a 30-29 lead.

The Lions got their last lead of the night with a basket from the baseline but Reilly scored on a shot in the lane to make it a 32-31 game and the Dodgers went on to claim the Dodger Classic win, 60-54.

White ended up with 20 points with Reilly, Marley Busch and Lily Wiegel all contributing 12.

"The big focus for this game was to correct the mistakes that we made in the game versus New Glarus the day before,” Dodgers coach Hayden Hardyman said. “We started out slow, but definitely turned up the intensity in the second half against Lomira. As a staff, we were so proud of how the team responded after tying a season low in point total in the first half at 18. The team motivated and energized each other, which ended up being the difference maker. Additionally, we made adjustments at half to our game plan. Defensively, we zone pressed the Lions and it forced many turnovers that led to points, allowing us to take the lead. Offensively, we utilized post players in Maggie White (20 points) and Marley Busch (12 points), which allows us to have others available for kick-outs or cuts through the lane, as McKenna Reilly and Lily Wiegel added 12 points each, while Rayona Kitelinger-Foster and Brienna Wasley finished with 2 points each.”

“A good response by the Dodgers over the holiday break," Hardyman said.
