Carley, Philip Hugh



Philip Hugh Carley, age 80 of Holmen, WI passed away at Gundersen Hospital, LaCrosse, after a 5-year battle with dementia.  

Phil was born March 16, 1943, to Hugo & Madeline (Schreiner) Carley, Dodgeville, WI.

Phil was a fan of most sports, especially Track and Field, fishing, and golf.  He was especially proud of his achievements on the track.  He was a Wis State Track and Field Champion winning Mineral Point's first State Team Championship, with his 3 sons following in his footstep to carry on the Carley tradition. Some of his track records still stand today.  After high school graduation, Phil attended Winona State College.  He then enlisted in the United States Army and served as a Spec 4 building and maintaining Nike Hercules Missiles in Okinawa.  

He married Janet Edge on November 9, 1968, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Darlington, WI. 

Phil worked various jobs and finally with the Wisconsin Dept. of Agriculture as a State Food Inspector for 25 years, retiring in 2003 after suffering a stroke.

Phil is survived by his wife Janet, three sons, Christopher (Angie) Onalaska, Jeffrey (Sue Haberkorn) Windsor, Aaron (Andrea) Holmen.  Three Grandchildren Jaden Carley, Peyton, and Emma Carley.  Two sisters, Terry (Wayne) Ottoway, Allen, TX, Cheryl Greenwood, Mineral Point, one brother Glen Wiesen, Linden, two brother-in-law's Steve (Sue) Edge and David (Judith) Edge and many nieces and nephews.

Phil is preceded in death by a son, Scott Philip, his parents Hugo & Madeline, his stepfather Milton (Kirby) Wiesen and a sister Linda Wiesen-Schaaf, a brother Doug Carley, his in-laws Harold and LaVon Edge and a brother-in law Mark Greenwood.  

Per Phil's wishes there will be no formal funeral service.  There was a graveside service for those who wished to attend on February 21, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at Greenwood Cemetery in Platteville, WI with Rev. Mark Miller, St. Clement Catholic Church, Lancaster officiating.  

Coulee Region Cremation Group, Onalaska is overseeing the arrangements.
