Five Dodgers head to sectional
Dodgeville wrestlers showed off their strength in the lower weight classes Saturday at their own Super Regional when they qualified the first five weights for Sectionals this Saturday at Wisconsin Dells.
Shane Rochon (106), Haaken Peterson (113) and Charlie Meudt (120) each won championships while Reid Spurley (126) and Nathan Johnson (132) both finished second.
Spurley medical forfeited his championship match. This tournament, for the reigning state champion was his first of the season as he has been recovering from surgery.
As a team the Dodgers finished seventh out of 13 teams.
Dodger coach Ryan Lord commented on the meet, “I thought all five boys wrestled extremely well and are peaking at the right time of the season. There was some uncertainty if we would have Reid back this season, and we were thrilled to have him back on Saturday. It was pretty awesome to see him earn his 100th win after the semi finals in front of our home crowd. With Saturday being his first competition of the year after ACL surgery coupled with being sick last week, we thought it was in Reid's best interest to surrender a medical forfeit in the finals. I know being the competitor he is, that he was not wild about not wrestling in the finals, but we thought it was the best decision health-wise at this point. He's looking more like himself with each day of wrestling and we're looking forward to the next two weeks of Reid's Dodger career.
“I was also thrilled with the way Nathan wrestled on Saturday. He lost a tough match in the semi finals to 2023 state qualifier Dylan Weigel of Belmont/Platteville. In the 3rd place and 2nd place wrestle back, Nathan probably wrestled his best matches of the season. In the 3rd place match Nate defeated Connor Brimeyer of Cuba City who was a state qualifier last year. In the wrestle back for 2nd, Nathan avenged a loss from earlier in the year by defeating 7th ranked Carson Minehan of Monroe by a score of 8-4. I think if Nathan continues to wrestle the way he wrestled in his last two matches, he is capable of beating anyone in his weight class.
“In addition to the boys wrestling at the Dells Sectional, DHS will also be represented by Ava Lord, Sierra Davenport and Brielle Walmer in the girls State Tournament Qualifier.”
