Marvin R. “Mort” Moyer, age 82, died on Thursday, December 19, 2024 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison.

He was born on July 26, 1942 in Dodgeville, a son of Ross and Myra (Cutler) Moyer. He grew up in Dodgeville and graduated from Dodgeville High School in 1960, where he lettered in football, baseball and basketball and was the 1960 homecoming king. He attended UW-Madison before enlisting in the U.S. Army.

Mort married Delores Foley on September 16, 1966 at St. Josephs’ Catholic Church in Dodgeville. He took a position with the U.S. Post Office and coached basketball at St. Joseph’s Grade School for 13 years, while attending UW-Platteville. He graduated with a degree in Health and Safety. Mort was inspired into coaching by legendary coach John “Weenie” Wilson.

Upon graduation, Mort and Delores moved to Benton WI, which was Mort’s first high school position. Here he had several conference championships, regional tournament wins and elected as “Most Outstanding Conference Coach”.  During the next 45 years he subsequently coached at Orangeville High School in Illinois, Freeport Aquin High School in Lanark, IL and Freeport High School. Mort received numerous awards and other honors through the years, including being inducted into the Dodgeville High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Whether at a basketball game at the Kohl Center or golf outings, he had former players come up to him and thank him for his motivation and leadership, and his being so very supportive.

Mort and Delores spent the last 25 years living at Bishop’s Bay and in May, 2023, they moved to Cardinal View Assisted Living. They enjoyed golf (he has 2 hole-in-ones), making many great friends, going to Packer Parties and supporting Badger Athletics. He was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Middleton.
