Pointers defensive tactics take down SW Wildcats
Mineral Point’s offense had 36 points on the board for a 16 point halftime lead but it was the defense that had veteran coach Dan Burreson talking.
The Pointers then went on to ease past Southwestern 69-49 in a SWAL match-up on the road.
“I thought we played really well defensively as a team,” Burreson said. “We made the Wildcats work for what they got.”
The Pointers had three players in double figures and eight players scored in the 20 point win.
“A lot of guys contributed in a lot of different ways,” Burreson said. “I thought our defense started with Eli Lindsey. He really uses his length well.
“We had three guys in double figures: Jaxson Wendhausen led us with 16, Drew Aschliman had 14 and Tucker Danneberg had 11.
“We moved the ball well at times though I think there is room for improvement.”
Burreson talked about more contributions to the win.
“Keaton Dempsey led us with 10 rebounds in a great team rebounding effort,” Burreson said. “Jaxson and Drew had eight rebounds each and Jake Phillips added seven. Atley Potterton finished well around the rim and played well defensively. Tucker Dannenberg did a lot of little things well tonight hitting the open man and taking a couple of charges. A good first step, but plenty of room for improvement.”
