Take time to enjoy the Fair

For 160 years the Iowa County Fair has taken place at the fairgrounds in Mineral Point over Labor Day weekend.  The fair means many things to many people and it a place where anyone can find something to like.

When I was growing up, the fair was what I looked forward to as soon as I was old enough to show hogs from my dad’s herd.  My brother and I would both be involved in showing our hampshires and overall we did pretty well with many firsts, champions and grand champions.

We both showed our animals but I must admit my brother was the better showman.  When it came to handing out ribbons for showmanship he came away with more than I did.  He had the patience to do well.

Of course the fair was also the place for entertainment.  Many relationships were started at the fair and every so often one would be long lasting.  

When I started playing football, my social time at the fair was limited but I still had to take care of my stock.  Often it was very hot so we had to do what we could to keep the animals cool and comfortable.

I learned a lot about agriculture in those days and that is still the way it is for the young people who are exhibiting today.

Looking over the entertainment line up for 2024 it appears the Fair Board has made sure there is something that appeals to everyone.  If you want to be entertained check out the line-up then go and enjoy.

There is an old saying that “It is your fair so be there.”

There is nothing wrong with that advice.  Go and enjoy.
