Schutte, Luella Mae

Luella Mae Schutte, age 87, of Dodgeville, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, August 13, 2024.

She was born May 12, 1937 to Paul and Inez Cypher and grew up on a farm in the Town of Barton near West Bend, WI. She graduated from West Bend High School in 1955 and went to work for B.C. Zeigler as a bookkeeper. On June 29, 1963, she married Ralph Schutte and moved to Stoughton and then to Dodgeville a few months later when Ralph started a new job. They started a family right away, having two boys and two girls.

Luella loved growing things and planted many trees, shrubs, and flowers and enjoyed keeping track of the different birds that came to the feeders. She was an avid gardener growing many different vegetables, fruits, and even flowers that were sold at the Dodgeville Farmer’s Market or by special order. She was a 4-H leader for many years, first in West Bend and then for the Rockwell Mills 4-H Club in Dodgeville. She enjoyed working with the youth and watching them grow up along the way. Once her children were grown, she worked at Corner Drug and for Gibson cards. She enjoyed her grandchildren and more recently, her first great granddaughter.  She loved to bake and cook and continued cooking as much as she could even as her sight failed.

She is survived by her children Paul Schutte of Calumet, MI, Mary (Jim) Severson of Stoughton, WI, Ann (Tom) Dunn of Suffolk, VA and Dale Schutte of Dodgeville; her grandchildren Martin Schutte, Isabel Schutte, Laura (nee Severson) (Nick) Gorden, Gwen Dunn; her great granddaughter Leliana Gorden; her sister-in-law Phyllis Schutte of Brookfield, WI; her brother-in-law Royce Schutte of Monticello, IN; her aunt-in-law Dorothy Stegner of Beaver Dam, WI; as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ralph, her parents Paul and Inez Cypher, her parents-in-law Gilbert and Florence Schutte, her sisters Arlene Cypher and Sharyn Eulert, her brothers-in-law Vern Eulert and Lloyd Schutte, her sister-in-law Virginia Schutte and grandson David Severson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Tuesday August 20, 2024 at ST. JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC CHURCH in Dodgeville. Burial will be held in St. Joseph Cemetery in Dodgeville. A visitation will be held from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Monday August 19, 2024 at the GORGEN-McGINLEY & AYERS FUNERAL HOME in Dodgeville and from 10:00 AM until 10:50 AM on Tuesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to the Iowa County Cancer Coalition, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church or to the family to support local 4-H programs.
