Along The Ad Routes

by Mike Reilly

Saturday morning breakfast took Bob, Terry, Dewey, Tom, Dave and me to Argyle - the Argyle Cafe. It’s inside of what used to be a house across from the post office. We left Dodgeville at 7:15 since that drive is a little further than most. Ironically, even with Dewey and Dave driving by themselves, we all reached our destination at the same time and walked inside together. We had a waitress (Lola) who was working there for the first time there. She’s from Texas - I’m  not sure how she got to Argyle.  This wasn’t her first day waitressing, however, as she didn’t need any schooling other than the menu and prices. We gave her a pretty hard time, but she gave it right back to us. I guess our reputation precedes us no matter where we are! I had a huge omelette with hash browns - really didn’t need the hash browns!

Oh, we recited the song “Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets” several times for her!

Fall baseball continues this Sunday with the last regularly scheduled games October 1. Eight teams play at Centennial Park and the Middle School Field at 10:00, noon, 2:00 and 4:00, all doubleheaders. There is a concession stand at both fields too!

Fall Baseball will go another week with games played Sunday, October 8. Mineral Point and Cross Plains had a game cancelled a couple weeks ago and they want to make it up on the 8th. We may have another two teams scheduled for that day too and make it another full Sunday of baseball. I should know more by next week.

The annual Cornish Festival held in Mineral Point last weekend was a huge sucess, as always. You could find almost anything you wanted tied to the Cornish heritage almost anytime you wanted!

Sunday at Fall Baseball, there was a little rain, some wind at times and some sun really beating down. You can really tell it’s fall! I guess the games at Centennial Park were held up for a few minutes due to the rain, but at the Middle Schol Field we kept playing through the moisture. The rain was a little heavier in some parts of town.

Last week I talked about people parking in handicapped spots when I was delivering papers. Well, this week I was the guilty one. I was delivering to Cathryn’s Market and the onnly place to park was in a handicapped spot, so I took it, ran in and out. It only took me a minute or two, so I hope I didn’t cause anyone a problem!

I’m jumping to Friday as the “day” that I want to exploit in September (29th), it’s “Ask a Stupid Question Day”. Ask a Stupid Question Day presents the opportunity for children who are shy to speak up and ask a question, no matter how scary this may seem or how stupid they fear the question may be. It is noy only about encouraging children to be more inquisitive, but it is about creating a friendly, positive, and encouraging classroom environment so that kids are not worried about being laughed at. When you take this into account, it is not difficult to see why a number of different countries around the world pay honor to Ask a Stupid Question Day.
