Cardinals sweep Lady Miners

Highland’s volleyball team avenged a loss to Shullsburg in the Six Rivers Invite 10 days ago with a conference sweep Tuesday.

Scores were 25-23, 25-29 and 25=23.  It was a night of strong play at the net for the Cardinals as well as demonstrating the ability to come back when behind.

“We looked like a different team tonight,” said Highland coach Maria Wineski.  “We fought back from behind several times and the girls worked very hard.  I am really proud of them.”

Whatever errors the Cardinals had they were able to use their heart to overcome them.

“We had some errors but perseverance and resilience let us overcome them,” said Wineski.  “We came back every time and took care of Shullsburg.”

The match had some extra fans attending.  Besides the Highland faithful the gym also had mechanical fans in each corner and in front of the scorers bench to help with air movement and moisture control.

“It was hot,” Wineski said.  “But we played hard through it.”

The Cardinals are young but tall at the net and their serving technique is aggressive. Wineski said the team still needs to work on passing as they are hitter heavy.

“This part of our game needs some focus and with our hitters we need to make our passing game work,” Wineski said.

Bronwyn Halverson was a force all night against the Lady Miners. She had 11 kills, 19 assists and a block.

Anna Hennessey had nine kills, a block and an ace.

Kate Tarrell contributed six kills, a block and a pair of aces.

Sophia Tarrell came up with four kills and a block.

Sumaryn Halverson had 12 assists and an ace.

Lillyanna Michek, the team libero, had 23 digs, four aces and was 100% in kill attempts, nailing the one attempt she had.

Brinleigh Bollant had nine digs and two aces.

Kaitlin Miller had two kills.

The Cardinals have River Ridge at home tonight.
