It was Iowa County Fair time so Saturday morning breakfast took us close to the fair grounds in Mineral Point at the Pointer Cafe. I had to stay for the fair so I drove my vehicle and Terry rode with me to keep me company and get me there! Tom drove Bob and Dewey and we had a surprise return from Dave Stone (wind surfing out west in Oregon). Marcia (May) Wagner joined us too. Breakfast there is always good and Terry does a great job as our waitress! We always run into several people we know too.

We received a nice note with renewal of the Chronicle from former Dodgevilleite and faithful reader Ariel Thomas, who now lives in Monroe. He said: “To all at the Dodgeville Chronicle- Just a note. I am sending my renewal. I really look forward to getting my paper each week. So nice to keep up on all the news from Dodgeville. I moved away in 2000 to Monroe. I still get back as often as I can. I really like Mike’s column, Along the Ad Routes. Like to see where he and his breakfast buddies go on Saturday. Keep up the great work.”

It wasn’t too long ago that I ran into Ariel and his wife at Cathryn’s Market. I think they were enjoying an ice cream cone and reminiscing about the old Corner Drug Store days in that location!

Saturday, after being at the Iowa County Fair in the morning, I went back to the Chronicle office for a while. The phone rang and I answered it. The woman on the other end said who is this and why did you call me. I said that she called me and asked who she was. She said well your number just came up as calling me and she’d rather not say. I said again, no you called me. Boy am I ever confused!

When I was at the fair, I got there pretty early in the morning and with the heat predicted parked under a shade tree with nobody around me.When I went back to my vehicle to leave, I was completely blocked in on both sides and in back with a tree in front of me. I couldn’t squeeze my vehicle through anywhere, but I was a ways back from the tree. After a few minutes of contemplating what to do, the guy who was parked to my left came to leave. He had kind of the same problem I had, but he had nobody to his left so he backed up and went forward a few times and finally got out. Then I had my chance to do the same and worked my way out too!

Today (Thursday) is a day that probably many have never heard of. It’s National “Neither Rain nor Snow Day”. I always add the word Sleet in there too! Right now, we bet you’re thinking “this special day is about a tranquil weather day with neither rain nor snow” ….wrong. Here’s the real scoop on this special day…. Neither Rain Nor Snow Day celebrates the opening of the first post office, the New York Post Office building on this day in 1914.
