Dodgers outlast Blue Devils to open with win
Dodgeville’s girls basketball team had a trio of girls get hot at the right time to give first year head coach Hayden Hardyman his first win, a 52-48 decision over Evansville Tuesday in a non-conference opener for both teams.
Evansville took and early lead but the Dodgers closed the gap and stayed close, getting within a pair of points at halftime when they trailed 20-18.
Marley Busch provided the first big momentum swing with a basket to tie the game out of the intermission, then she followed with a pair of free throws and a driving lay-up for a 24-20 lead.
Evansville came back but Lily Wiegel turned it on with four three pointers and 16 second half points to give the Dodgers some cushion.
But the Blue Devils came back again and took a 46-45 lead with 2:17 to play.
Enter senior guard McKenna Reilly who had been scoreless up to that point. She got the lead back at 47-46 with a basket, scored again to get the lead back with 31 seconds left on a drive then buried two free throws with 13 second left for a 51-48 lead. Busch’s free throw with five second remaining provided the final margin.
Wiegel finished with 21 points for the Dodgers and Busch added 15.
Brooklyn Maves was the Blue Devils leader with 15, Ava Brandenburg added 13 and Jer’Novia Hermanson 10.
