Barneveld finishes strong season at Sectionals

Barneveld cleared the first hurdle in Sectional volleyball play with a 3-1 win over a strong Southwestern Wildcats team.

The Golden Eagles took the first two sets before the two teams squared off in an epic toe to toe battle that ended up in Southwestern’s favor, 27-25. The Eagles then ended the match with a 25-16 finish.

Scores were 25-16, 25-11, 27-25, 25-16.

“We played really well against Southwestern with 16 team aces,  along with minimal hitting errors and serving errors,” said coach Martina Reuter. “We had a fire at home that couldn't be stopped.   We did a really good job on offense getting them out of system forcing free balls or easier hits.”

The win earned the Eagles the right to travel to Johnson Creek Saturday where they faced Fall River, champions of the Trailways West with a state tournament berth going to the surviving team.

The Eagles captured the first set but Fall River regrouped and took the last three to end Barneveld’s run.

Scores were 25-20, 23-25, 23-25 and 19-25.

“We came out fired up against Fall River winning the first set. but the game quickly changed in the second set with us missing quite a few serves and being a bit rattled being on the Fall River side,” Reuter said. “Fall River started going for any points they could score, getting us on some dumps and unexpected plays. We battled and played really good defense but couldn't get our offense as strong as it has been in the past.”

The loss does not define the Eagles and the fine season they had.

“I am so proud of this team and making it so close to state shows the level of play we are at within our program,” said Reuter. “It was an amazing season with so many great moments, and we will never forget our seniors.”
