Highland Schools close Monday due to threat

By Levi Zimmerman
The Highland Community School District was closed Monday after a threat was made.
According to District Administrator Randy Refsland, the threat was not made by a student or toward a student.
He said the threat was made by an adult toward the District as a whole.
Refsland said the District learned of the threat Sunday evening and made the decision to close its doors for the day.
Classes resumed normally Tuesday, but additional law enforcement was requested, as a Highland Police Department officer was present.
Refsland shared this press release with the Dodgeville Chronicle:
"The Highland Community School District was closed today due to a potential threat. A full investigation has been conducted by the Iowa County Sheriff's Office. Initial information indicated the possibility an adult subject made a threatening statement, but a thorough investigation found evidence to disprove the involvement of an adult. It has been determined that the threat was not credible. The results of the investigation now allow us to return to a full and normal schedule beginning tomorrow."
"As a school district we are thankful for the work by the Iowa County Sheriff's Office Detectives and Deputies and appreciate the large amount of time and resources they put into this investigation. The school district continues to take the safety of our students and staff seriously and to lessen concern we will have an officer from the Highland Police Department here during the school day as a further precaution this week. We look forward to returning to the work of educating students."
