When the score reached 11-1 in favor of visiting Potosi/Cassville the Highland girls basketball team knew they had to change things if they wanted to avoid a blowout in their Six Rivers West match-up Friday.
Not only did the Cardinals turn things around, they used some big rebounds, bigger stops and even bigger free throws to send the co-op team home with a 44-40 loss.
The last six minutes were not for the faint at heart.
The Cardinals were trailing 33-31 after a three pointer by Cassie Cooley.
In a scamble for a loose ball Grace Dreischmeier was fouled, went to the line and calmly put in two free throws to tie it at 6:28. Highland then took the lead when Bronwyn Halverson made a move in the middle and put in her shot.
Miranda Kieler found the range and suddenly P/C led 36-35.
But Harlee Fredericks had the answer and her basket gave Highland a  37-36 advantage.
It was then 38-37 P/C as Cassie Cooley drained a pair of free throws.
The next foul put the Cardinals in double bonus which was just what Harper Drury was waiting for and she put in both free throws for a 39-38 lead, the advantage the Cardinals held until the end.
But there was still plenty of suspense the teams saved for the last minute.
Dreischmeier was fouled and made the second of two tosses. After P/C missed a shot Drury was hacked and also made one of two. P/C was off on their try again and Drury again drew the foul, making the second of two shots.
After one of P/C's two seniors, Emily Bierman, made two free throws to bring her team within two at 42-40, Drury was fouled gain and her two free throws made it an unreachable four point difference with six seconds left.
Highland was led in scoring by Kate Tarrell who came off the bench to score 12 points. Fredericks was solid and added 11.
Kieler was P/C's top scorer with 10.
Highland coach Josh Tarrell was worried about the start but glad the girls got untracked.
"We were struggling with our entry passes," Tarrell said. "We have turnovers but this is the first time we have had problems with the entry pass."
Tarrell felt Fredericks had some big moments with her rebounding, scoring and handling the ball.
"She had a few rough moments but she overcame them and played very well after that," Tarrell said. "We also had a good performance from Kate who scored her career high.
"Potosi/Cassville is young and will be a good team in the future," Tarrell said. "Both teams missed a lot of shots tonight."
"We were lucky and got up by four at the end," Tarrell said. "We didn't play as well as we should but we did play good enough to win."
