Pointers fall short against Cubans

By Levi Zimmerman
The Mineral Point girls basketball team welcomed the undefeated Cuba City to town Tuesday night in SWAL play.
The midseason matchup was the pair's first meeting of the season, as the Pointers entered 9-3 and Cuba City 12-0.
Mineral Point got on the board early on a two-point basket by Belle Watters.
After a quick five-point swing by Cuba City, Watters was on the assisting end of a basket by senior Katelyn Cox.
The Cubans had a sharpshooter on their side in Jenna Dailey, who knocked down three, three-pointers in the first half.
Cuba City took a 12-7 lead, but a three-pointer by Mineral Point's Laci Lindsey cut the gap back down.
Lindsey made another big three later in after a basket by the Cubans.
After both sides traded baskets once more, Dailey made the last of her three, threes of the first half to give the Cubans a 28-27 lead with just minutes left in the opening half.
Lindsey put the Pointers back on top with a 29-28 lead on a two-point score.
Cuba City started hot in the second half, and Dailey was the catalyst, drilling another three.
The Cubans went ahead by double digits in the 12th minute of the second half after several turnovers and poor rebounding from the Pointers.
But Mineral Point didn't let things get out of hand, as they came back close after a basket by Cox brought the score to 46-45.
But none other than Dailey made a three-pointer, putting the Cubans back on top.
Trailing by one, Mineral Point made a critical turnover that resulted in a steal-and-score by Vosberg.
Despite a few more chances with the ball, the Pointers weren't able to get anything to fall through the net, and Cuba City won 55-49.
With the loss, Mineral Point moved to 9-4 overall and 5-1 in the SWAL.
