In the pre-season conference preview Dodgeville and Platteville were picked to slug it out for the SWC title so Friday's make-up game was expected to be an important step for the winner.
For the first half it was all it was billed to be as both teams traded scores until Platteville edged ahead 26-22 at intermission.
Then the unexpected happened.
After Platteville's Garrison Taschner and Dodgeville's Chandler Batchelor started the second half with a basket each the Hillmen went off for a 20-0 run that spanned nearly eight minutes and pushed Platteville to a 63-40 win.
Zach McClain, a 6-9 junior, had six points during the run with the rest of the points shared among six different Hillmen. There were three treys in the run, one from McClain, one from Taschner and one from Simon Boebel.
Dodgeville had a spurt with eight straight ponts that came from a basket from short range by Batchelor, two drives by Charlie Keith and a basket from the baseline by Ben Haakenson.
But the Hillmen strung together six more points and pushed the lead to 55-34. It was coast mode from there.
The Hillmen used a balanced attack with eight different players scoring. Lucas Ludlum and Wyatt Heer led with 11 while Tashner, McClain and Keegan Coffey all had 10. Coffey, a 6-3 sophomore, came in to provide a force off the bench.
Matthew Pittz led the Dodgers with 12 points, all in the first half. He was shut down the second half with a strong defensive effort by the Hillmen that featured outside pressure and traps.
The Hillmen also limited the Dodgers to one shot most of the time as they controlled the boards.
Batchelor, at 7-2, had company around him all night and squared off with the 6-9 McClain, to add 10.
"That run was the difference in the game," said Dodgeville coach Matthew McGraw. "We had trouble with their pressure and their rebounding."
"I thought we had a good game plan going in but they got us to play at their pace and not ours," McGraw added. "We ended up getting out of synch. When we play at our pace, set our own cuts and get good shots we are OK. We got away from that."
"They forced us into taking some quick shots and we had too many one pass, one shot moments," McGraw said. "We had too many empty possessions."
"But there is a lot of season left and we will learn from this," McGraw said. "We know we can be better."
Next is a trip to Prairie du Chien Friday to take on a tough Blackhawk team.
