One repeat champion, one third place finisher for Dodger wrestlers at Bi-State Classic

Dodgeville's wrestling squad came back with a champion and a third place finisher at the power laden Bi-State last weekend at La Crosse.
For Reid Spurley it ws the second straight Bi-State title for the sophomore.
Spurley (120) repeated as a Bi-State Champion, while Charlie Meudt (113) finished in third place to lead the Dodgeville wrestling team at the Bi-State Classic hosted by Holmen High School at the La Crosse Center.
Spurley had an opening round bye followed by a technical fall, two pins and 3-0 decisions in both the semifinal and the finals.
"I thought Reid had an outstanding tournament and was in control and pretty," said Dodgeville co-coach Ryan Lord. "He had a very tough opponent in Roen Carey of Mineral Point in the finals. I thought Reid did a great job of staying on the attack and applying pressure the entire match, both on his feet and in the top position, but Roen is a tough and talented wrestler who keeps good position and is difficult to score on."
Meudt repeated as a third place finisher in his bracket.
"I thought Charlie had a great tournament in an extremely tough bracket which featured three state champions from last season," Lord said.
Meudt began the tournament with four straight pins to advance to the semifinals. In the semifinals he faced Blake Beissel of Hastings, MN. Beissel is currently the 14th ranked wrestler in the country at 113 and is committed to wrestle at the University of Minnesota.
"I thought Charlie wrestled tough against Beissel in an 8-0 loss, but I would have liked to see him push Beissel to a few flurries," said Lord. "I think Charlie did a lot of upper body ties looking for a big move, but I think tying up slowed the pace a bit which I think was to the benefit of Beissel. I can't think of too many wrestlers over the years who can match Charlie's quickness and he's a lot of fun to watch."
Beissel went on to win by a 12-0 score in the finals and was named the outstanding wrestler of the tournament.
Meudt earned a major decision victory in the consolation semifinals followed by a pin in the third place match.
Other Dodger wrestlers recording wins at Bi-State included Nathan Johnson (126) and Mason Winch (152) who each went 2-2, while Thomas Lundell (138) and Izaak Duran (220) each went 1-2.
"I was impressed with Nathan in his first action of the year," said Lord. "He started out with a major decision over a kid with a 13-1 record coming into the tournament. He followed that up with a pin before losing a 10-5 match in round 3. In his consolation round he was in control of the match 5-2 before getting caught and pinned. I know Nathan wasn't happy with his results, but I thought he did a great job considering he was just cleared medically a couple of weeks ago and really hasn't had much practice time in addition to wrestling in his first matches."
The next wrestling action for the Dodgers will be Saturday at the Eagle Invitational at Sauk Prairie High School as well as the WWCA Challenge Series Regional (JV) at Whitewater.
