Dodgers push Crimson Tide but come up short
That is how coach Josh Busch views the gutty performance by the Dodgers who battled the Crimson Tide to the end before losing the non-conference match-up 55-44. The final margin was aided by five of six free throws by the Tide when the Dodgers were forced to foul in the last minute to try to get the ball.
It couldn't have been much closer the first half as both teams went into intermission with 20 points on the board. Edgerton struck first after the half when freshman Marti Rebman put in one of her four three pointers, this one from the left corner.
McKenna Reilly and Maggie White answered the shot by Rebman with a driving lay-in and a shot from the lane respectively for a 24-23 lead. Rebman then put in another triple and scoring leader Sylvia Fox made a pair of free throws for a 28-24 Tide advantage.
Reilly then scored on another drive to cut the lead to two before the Tide started to pull away.
Edgerton pushed the difference to 10 points at 36-26 on Rebman's third trey of the half and two put-backs by 5-11 senior post Shannon Rusch.
The Dodgers had one more thrust in them on a drive by Reilly, two Maggie White baskets and a three pointer by Lily Wiegel to get within four with 2:20 left but Rusch and Rebman found the basket and the rest of the scoring for the Tide was done at the line as the clock wound down.
Dodgeville had three players in double figures with Reilly and White scoring 13 each and Marley Busch put in 11.
Senior guard Sylvia Fox led all scorers with 21 points. Rebman finished with 11 while Rusch and Langer both had 10 to close out scoring for the Tide.
Dodgeville coach Josh Busch Busch was happy with the effort.
"We played well," Busch said. "We showed we can play with anyone."
He said too many little things kept the team from what would have been an upset.
"We got the ball where we wanted it and got our shots but we didn't hit enough of them," Busch said. "They hit their three point shots which also made a difference. "
"We cut it from 12 down to four late in the game," Busch added. "We fought, we competed and we had a chance at the end."
