Dodgers use strong second half to cruise past RV

The four veteran players for the Dodgeville girls basketball team provided the lion’s share of the scoring Thursday to lead the Dodgers to a 71-39 win over River Valley for their second SWC win in the early season.

Maggie White and Marley Busch both put up 17 points while McKenna Reilly added 13 and Lily Wiegel 12. White had 11 of her total the first half with Busch had nine of hers. Reilly drilled six and Wiegel three as the Dodgers took a 31-22 halftime lead.

A talk at halftime helped the Dodgers change their strategy somewhat and opened things up 40-17 the second half for the high scoring win.

“We discussed at half time that we needed to attack the lane more to open up better quality shots,” first year coach Hayden Hardyman said. “We did just that and things began to click for us. More players began driving and setting screens, getting us good looks.”

Eight players scored the second half.

The Dodgers had a 27-8 run to start the game. White had all 11 of her first half points in the run. Busch had nine, Reilly four and Tommi Crubaugh two.

The Blackhawks made a late run to get within nine. Elizabeth Gomstomski led with seven, Karina Olson five and Grace Morley drilled a trey.

“We got within nine at the half but Dodgeville blew the game open with seven minutes to go,” said RV coach Darrell Parrish.

River was led in scoring by Osborn and Gomstomski with seven each. Brooklyn Stokes, Alana Merritt and Grace Morrey contributed five.

The Dodgers are undefeated on the season and in the SWC.  Hardyman is hoping the string can continue.

“We will continue to make positive strides, as we face another tough SWC team in Platteville next Friday,” Hardyman said.
