D/MP girls soccer beats PDC in SWC title race

After a pair of tough losses to good teams at the New Glarus Invitational Saturday, the Dodgeville/Mineral Point girls soccer team moved back into the win column Tuesday night with a 3-1 victory over Prairie du Chien/River Ridge/Seneca.
Dodgeville/Mineral Point, the host, jumped out to a quick one score lead less than a minute into the SWC game.
Junior Lorelei Allbright assisted senior Ella Grunow on the goal at the 41-second mark.
The pair would connect on another goal in the 31st minute for Dodgeville/Mineral Point's second goal.
All three of Dodgeville/Mineral Point's goals were scored in the first period.
Junior Olivia Olson went unassisted in the 35th minute.
Dodgeville/Mineral Point was strong defensively to hang on for the win, completing a season sweep of Prairie du Chien/River Ridge/Seneca.
Dodgeville/Mineral Point's goalkeeper, senior Sarah Johnson, had six saves for the night.
Dodgeville/Mineral Point had 26 shots with 14 on-goal.
Head coach Cristian Flores shared his thoughts on Tuesday's home victory.
"We played good. We scored early and played great soccer for the majority of the game," said Flores. "I'm happy to see our forwards connecting in the final third to get good quality opportunities which led to good goals."
With the win, Dodgeville/Mineral Point improved to 10-4-3 overall and 6-0-2 in the SWC standings.
Platteville/Lancaster also has six wins in the league at 6-0-1; Platteville/Lancaster's one tie came against Dodgeville/Mineral Point on April 26 in a 1-1 decision.
Meanwhile, River Valley sits at 5-3.
With two SWC games left on the regular season schedule, Dodgeville/Mineral Point travels to River Valley Friday in a 5:00 p.m. start.
Dodgeville/Mineral Point defeated the Blackhawks in their first meeting 2-1 on April 21.
Dodgeville/Mineral Point will then host Platteville/Lancaster Tuesday in a matchup that will ultimately decide the final SWC standings.
