The old Doublemint gum commercial touted "Double the pleasure, double the fun."
Dodgeville's wrestling program may have had that jingle in mind after 106 pound sophomore Charlie Meudt took the WIAA Division 2 championship, just minutes before 113 pound sophomore classmate and teammate Reid Spurley did the same.
Dodgeville coach Ryan Lord, a four year letterwinner at the UW-Madison and a former state champion from Ithaca, said the whole experience was an outstanding experience...from the send off, the crowd of students and adults who helped fill the Kohl Center for three day event to the actual sweep of the two weights by the highly talented wrestling duo to the packed gym when the wrestlers returned home, championships in hand.
Heather Olson, long time wrestling enthusiast and Dodgeville Chronicle wrestling reporter/photographer said she had attended may welcome home celebrations for Dodgeville wrestlers who have appeared at the state tournament, some who have won it but this was the first time she has seen so many people at the return celebration
"We usually have them in the cafeteria but the people just kept coming and coming so we had to have the whole gym," Olson said. "It was a great turnout."
The fact that Meudt and Spurley are best friends, dedicated to wrestling all year long and teammates who are always there to help everyone get better, helps with how they have been viewed by the community. They are the type of kids people want to follow.
And follow them they did. Their trip to the titles was followed not only in person but on Facebook Live through the efforts of Dodgeville Activities Director Joey Martin.
When the two champions claimed their titles they drew attention not by their antics but by their quiet reserve.
As one of the Dodgeville coaches put it, "They did not do flips or stage and extensive celebration on the mat. They showed people they have been on a big stage before and walked off as gentlemen. Celebrations are for those who did not expect to win. Charlie and Reid both were and are class acts."
"It was tough but it was fun," Meudt said about the entire state championship experience.
"It was definitely fun," Spurley agreed.
Both wrestlers said it took a wrestling community to help them get to this point. They agreed it took starting young with their parents taking them to wrestling practice, to surrounding themselves with good wrestlers who love the sport to having great coaches working with them.
This was Meudt's top wrestling experience and for Spurley it was one of the best. Spurley has been in different large scale tournaments. Both hope to make what happened this season to become a habit.
"Both of them faced some very tough kids this past weekend," Lord said. "They have both been bouncing around from number one in the rankings to second to third. They faced kids who were in the same routine."
Lord felt sticking to what they do well helped Meudt and Spurley get the titles. They had seen some of their opponents before and had a good idea what to expect.
Both wrestlers hope to see the kids in the youth program see what can happen if you put in the work.
"It is important to start when you are young and stay with it," Meudt said. "Staying with it is very important."
So is putting in the work and being around good people.
"There were days when I really wanted to coast but Charlie was there making sure I got better," said Spurley. "Having good teammates is very important."
So is having things come together on the mats at the Kohl Center in front of a packed house.
"The whole thing is pretty cool," said coach Lord.
