The field for the WIAA Division 5 2022 girls state tournament has been set and Highland will open the semi-finals Friday at 9 am when they take on top seeded Randolph.
Following is a preview of the D5 field.

ABOUT THE
DIVISION 5 FIELD:
#1 Seed Randolph Rockets
Undefeated Randolph receives the top seed in the bracket. Their only other experience in the State Tournament came in 2001 when the Lady Rockets lost in the semifinals. They are the champions in the West Division of the Trailways Conference this season. Their return to State after more than two decades comes by virtue of a 43-31 triumph over Albany in the McFarland Sectional final.
#2 Seed Assumption Royals
Defending champion Assumption attempts to win its second consecutive championship. The #2-seeded Royals make their seventh appearance at State overall. Four consecutive appearances from 2013-16 resulted in State championships in 2013 and 2016 with runner-up finishes in 2014 and 2015. This season, they placed first in the South Division of the Marawood Conference. Their quest for consecutive championships continues following a 40-26 win over Wabeno/Laona in the sectional final played at D.C. Everest.
#3 Seed McDonnell Catholic
Third-seeded McDonell Catholic makes its second consecutive State Tournament appearance after their first experience resulted in a loss in the semifinals last year. The Macks advance to the State semifinals this season with a 37-33 victory over Northwood in the sectional final held at Amery. They finished the regular season as runners-up in the Western Division of the Cloverbelt Conference. Prior to joining the WIAA, the Macks most notable finish as a member of WISAA was a runner-up finish in Division 2 in 2000.
#4 Seed Highland Cardinals
Highland is the #4 seed in the bracket. The Cardinals will experience the State Tournament for the first time. They began celebrating their first-ever trip to the tournament after the buzzer sounded in their 54-49 win over Bangor in the Richland Center Sectional final. The Cardinals were co-champions with Belmont in the West Division of the Six Rivers Conference during the regular season.

ROCKETS NOTES:
Junior power forward 5-11 Jorey Buwalda averages 20.6 points per game and 9.5 rebounds to lead the Rockets. She has totaled 556 points and hauled in 256 rebounds. She also leads the Rockets in steals with 64 and blocks with 36.
Senior guard Presley Buwalda and senior guard Abby Katsma are next as each averaged seven points per game.
Junior post Maddie DeVries is second in rebounds with 111.
The Rockets have a shooting percentage of 39% overall. They have made 30% (131) of their three pointers. They are 60% from the free throw line.
The closest game the Rockets had this season was a 59-58 win over Division 1 Sheboygan North.
Assumption Royals
Season Record: 21-3
Conference Record: 16-2 for first place in the Marawood Conference
Coach: Ryan Klein (Maryville, 2006) is 99-52 in six years at Assumption.

ROYALS NOTES:
First team all state selection Ainara Sainz de Rozas leads the Royals in scoring with an 11.4 ppg average (319 over 28 games). Coaches who have seen her play this season say she has upped her game. Freshman Anna Schooley is the leading rebounder with 136 (4.9 per game) and junior Malea Kolo has added 110 (3.9 per game).
Sainz de Rozas has 35 three pointers has 35 three pointers and is shooting 38% from beyond the arc.
Losses for the Royals this season were to Phillips (56-53), Auburndale (40-34) and Neillsville (47-39). Neillsville has qualified for state in D4.

Conference Record: 12-2 for second place to Osseo-Fairchild in the Cloverbelt Conference.

Senior shooting guard Lauren Deetz averages 175 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. Right behind is sophomore guard Emily Cooper who averages 11.9 and is the leading three ball shooter with 52 made in 168 tries (31%). Cooper and junior guard Marley Hughes are the assist leaders with 126 and 120. Destiny Bauman (5-7, sr) and Abigail Petranovich (5-10, sr) have both accounted for 171 rebounds.

CARDINALS NOTES: Making their first trip ever to the girls state tournament the Cardinals come in with a senior laden team that have been playing together most of their lives, taking their lumps as freshmen and becoming a very good team their senior year. Katelyn Esser scored her 1000th point this season and averages 12.3 points per game right behind scoring leader Rachel Miller who averages 13.0.
Leading rebounder is Malayna Fredericks who has grabbed 176. Esser has 164 and Miller 163. Fredericks also is the steals leader with 83.
Katelyn Mueller has 75 assists and 70 steals.
Miller with 43, Meg Tarrell with 43 and Esser with 24 lead the three point shooting for the Cardinals.
Esser has 12 blocks and Miller 10.
