Two Dodgeville wrestlers will take the mat at the Kohl Center this weekend at the WIAA State Individual Championships.
Charlie Meudt, who finished sixth at last year's state meet,will again be in the 106 weight class. Reid Spurley will be wrestling at 113 and is undefeated. Both are sophomores, both are seeded #2 and both won championships at last week's Richland Center Sectionals.
A third wrestler, Mason Winch, put up a battle at 170 and just missed qualifying with a fourth place finish. He put up a real fight in his first match with a returning state tournament wrestler who was 48-0 and is now 51-0. Winch got a wrestleback and won his second match 6-4 to put him in the third place match. In that match he got behind then tried some big moves that did not happen.
"Mason will be back next season and it was good to see him get to Sectionals this year," said Dodgeville coach Ryn Lord.
Spurley looked great in his sectional matches according to Lord.
"He was dominating," Lord said. "He likes to do well."
Spurley had a couple pins then won the title by a major decision.
Charlie Meudt was in a tough bracket but worked his way though it.
"He was great again," Lord said.
He won his first match with a pin, his second 15-1 and his title match 10-1.
"One thing about state is you have to be ready to wrestle," Lord said. "It will be nice to have two going about the same weight so they can work out together and support each other. Reid and Charlie are good friends."
The last title winner for the Dodgers was Brady Wetter six years ago.
